THE INTERLOCK

MUSICAL CONVERSATION

Lead. Response. Movement.

One instrument begins. Another answers. The rhythm folds back into itself. Voices enter. Hosho begins to move. Separate parts become one living pulse.

This is kushaura ne kutsinhira — the interlocking musical conversation at the heart of Mazana Movement.

It is not simply a rhythm to follow. It is a sound to enter.

Kushaura • The Lead

The opening musical voice. The first mbira introduces the cycle, laying out harmonic pathways and inviting the room into dialogue.

Kutsinhira • The Response

The interlocking counterpart. Striking between the lead notes, it completes the phrase and awakens an inherent melody born from both players together.

Hosho & Ngoma • The Pulse

The rolling conversation of dried gourds and hollowed log drums that drives the tempo forward and grounds the collective sound.

UNAMPLIFIED

ACOUSTIC IDENTITY

Nothing between you and the music.

Every sound begins with the instrument itself.

Wood • Gourd • Hide • Reed • Forged Steel • Voice

No electric instrumentation is used to manufacture the experience. The instruments are the sound.

01. Forged Steel & Calabash

Hand-tuned steel keys vibrating inside dried deze gourds, framed by the warm shimmer of machachara beads.

02. Hardwood & Cured Hide

Drums carved from fallen mutiti logs and crowned with cow and goat hide, heat-tuned over open embers for deep, physical resonance.

03. Mapudzi & Hota

Selected gourds filled with natural river seeds, creating a rolling rhythm that carries the musicians forward and sets the room in motion.

MASTER MUSICIAN

THE LINEAGE

Meet Sekuru Gore

At the centre of Mazana Movement is Sekuru Evason Gore — master musician, teacher, storyteller and elder.

His musical life stretches across generations of Zimbabwean music. His vocabulary reaches far beyond a single instrument.

He does not simply perform the tradition. He carries it.
